OP Labs, the core development organization behind Optimism, has cut roughly one-fifth of its workforce in a move it framed as a strategic refocus rather than a financial emergency. The layoffs were disclosed via an internal message shared publicly by Jing Wang, Optimism co-founder and CEO of OP Labs, who said the team is “well capitalized with years of runway,” but needs to reduce complexity, speed up decision-making, and cut coordination overhead.
The scale of the cut appears meaningful. The screenshot shared by Wang showed a team channel with 102 members, and she confirmed 20 employees were laid off—suggesting a reduction of around 19.6%. Even at large tech companies, a near-20% trim often signals a redefinition of priorities. In crypto infrastructure, where teams can be lean and where execution cycles move quickly, that kind of cut is usually a deliberate attempt to reset internal tempo and narrow the product surface area.
